Chapter Eight

“Oh crap.”

“Did we just run out of gas?” Odie asks.

I try starting the engine, but all it does is spin uselessly without catching. “I think so.”

She groans and bangs her head against the headrest. “What is up with all the car stuff lately?”

A car honks as it passes. I put the car in neutral and drift into the breakdown lane. “I’m sure everything will work out.”

“How did you go through a whole tank of gas in one day?” Odie demands. “We didn’t drive that much.”

“I don’t know. Although… there might not have been a whole tank in it. In fact, now that I think of it…” Wincing, I finish my embarrassing thought. “Yeah, I’m pretty sure the rental car guy said something about me needing to fill it up. I guess with all the activity I forgot.”

Odie gives me a look of utter disbelief. “Wasn’t there a warning light or something?”

“Yeah, but I don’t know how long it’s been on. It’s in a different spot than my car,” I add defensively. “I just noticed it. I thought we’d have enough to get to the gas station.”

“Of course you did,” she says, pulling out her phone. “Why would you think anything different? Why would you be a responsible human being if everything is always handed to you on a platter?”

“What is your problem?” I snap, but my explanation will have to wait until she’s off the phone. She gives our location to AAA, and I hear the operator say it will be at least an hour wait.

“Unless there’s an emergency?” the operator asks.

“Do you consider being stranded with a woman-child an emergency?” Odie fumes.

“Ah, no,” says the operator. “Sorry. Sit tight. Keep warm.”

As soon as she hangs up, I repeat my question. “What is your problem?”

“You are my problem,” Odie says, unbuckling her seatbelt and climbing into the back seat.

“What is that supposed to mean? And what are you doing?”

She’s now climbed over the back seat too, getting something from the cargo area. “Do you want to freeze to death?” she says. “I’m getting the survival kit they’ve got back here.”

“Don’t be so dramatic. It’s not that cold.” Although after driving for most of the afternoon with the windows partially open, the car is pretty chilly. I dig my hands into my coat pockets. “And stop avoiding my question. Why are being so bitchy all of a sudden? And don’t tell me you’re just aggravated, because you’ve been nothing but smiles and sunshine all afternoon. What changed?”

“I wasn’t stranded on the side of the road all afternoon, was I?” She opens up the duffle bag and pulls out a thermal blanket. “Come sit back here. We should share body heat.”

“I’m fine where I am,” I growl.

Turning her back on me, she leans against the seat and tucks herself in. “Fine by me.”

After maybe ten minutes of watching my breath in angry silence, I give in and climb into the back. The blanket’s already warm. I scoot right up next to
